Beginner’s Guide to Hot Tub Care

A hot tub is a self-contained machine, and keeping the water and other elements of this machine clean will keep your hot tub ready for use. There are five basic areas to keep an eye on when servicing your own hot tub in Taylors, SC. The first area to focus on is your water chemistry. For clean hot tub water, you want to keep your water chemistry up, and you do this by testing your hot tub water! If you use your hot tub frequently, it’s best to test the water 2-4 times per week and adjust the pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and sanitizer levels as needed. We recommend using a test kit and appropriate hot tub chemicals to balance the water.

Alongside testing the water, you’ll want to make sure the water in the hot tub remains at proper levels. You don’t want your hot tub overflowing, so too much water should be avoided. However, you also don't want too little water in your hot tub. If the skimmer inside the hot tub starts sucking in air instead of water, the pump could be damaged. The best water levels are in the middle of the skimmer or slightly above it. Use a garden hose to fill the hot tub water levels whenever necessary.

The other areas of hot tub maintenance to focus on are cleaning the filter, hot tub and cover. Cleaning the hot tub filter once every couple of weeks is necessary to make sure it can properly trap dirt and debris. Depending on the size of the filter and frequency of your hot tub use, you may want to clean the filter twice every couple of weeks. It’s typical that once a year you’ll want to replace the hot tub filter. Cleaning the hot tub itself is also important. Of course, floating debris can be removed with a skimmer net, but once every couple months you’ll also want to drain the hot tub and conduct a full cleaning of all surfaces. A pro tip here is to avoid using typical household cleaning products and soaps. Instead, use hot tub specific cleaning products to keep out contaminants that can affect water quality once you refill the hot tub. Lastly, make sure you air out the hot tub cover. You can also wipe the cover down to avoid getting any outside dirt and debris in your water.
